A meeting designed from the first minute
A sales demonstration rarely starts with selling straight away. First there's an invitation to a "free check-up" or a "product presentation", then a friendly atmosphere, refreshments, a small welcome gift. Only later does the actual offer appear | and it pushes for an immediate decision: "this price is only valid during today's meeting".
None of this is a coincidence. Every element | the salesperson's friendliness, the small gift, the warm atmosphere | is part of a technique designed to create a sense of obligation before you've even heard the price.
Why this works even on careful people
Psychologists have described this principle for decades as the reciprocity rule: when someone gives us something for free, we feel obliged to give something back. Combined with time pressure | "only today", "only now" | this mechanism effectively switches off rational thinking, even in people who would otherwise remain fully cautious.
Time pressure is key here. At home, without the salesperson present, without the atmosphere of the meeting, it's much easier to say no and think the decision over calmly. The salesperson knows this well | which is why they do everything possible not to let you leave without a signature.
Your right to think it over
It's worth knowing one key consumer right: if you sign a contract away from the company's premises | at a demonstration, during a home visit, on a trip | you generally have the right to withdraw within 14 days, without giving a reason. This right applies to most contracts of this kind, and no one can take it away from you.
There is one exception worth remembering: if you were the one who invited the salesperson into your own home, the protection may work differently. That's exactly the situation where extra caution is worth having.
How to respond during the meeting
- Don't sign anything the same day | ask to take the documents home
- Don't pay a deposit to "lock in the price" | that's a technique that builds commitment
- Say calmly, "I'm not signing today, I need to think it over" | and repeat it as many times as needed
- Consult someone close to you before making a decision
How we practise this in the ODYSSEY course
In the "Recognise the scam" module you'll find a simulation of exactly this situation | you practise recognising manipulation through friendliness and haste, and calmly saying "I'm not signing today" until it becomes a natural reflex.
